Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter brings the most consistent and high-quality surf to Praia do Silveira. As the South Atlantic storm track fires up, longer-period swell from the east-southeast becomes the norm, with average heights hovering around 1.3-1.4m and periods often pushing into the 9-10 second range. Critically, this is when offshore wind potential peaks. Cold fronts sweeping across southern Brazil generate favorable west to northwest winds, cleaning up the lines and creating the kind of shoulder-to-head-high waves that make this beach a destination. If you’re looking for pumping waves with a glassy surface, this is your window.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see a blend of conditions. April still enjoys a solid average period of 9.0s and a 30% chance of ideal wind, but the swell energy is slightly less consistent. September is the opposite: the swell is powerful (average 1.5m) and often from the optimal east-southeast, but the wind becomes more fickle. The North Atlantic high pressure starts to strengthen, bringing more north-northeast winds that can ruin the face. You’ll need to be patient and time your sessions perfectly around frontal passages to score the good ones.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

This is the extended summer period, dominated by tropical trade winds from the north-northeast quadrant. While there is still plenty of east to southeast swell (especially from distant storms), the onshore wind blows over 70% of the time, creating lumpy, choppy conditions. Wave periods dip to 8.0-8.6s on average, favoring groveling boards. The best chance for a clean wave comes during brief periods when a trailing cold front brings a southerly wind shift, but those windows are short and infrequent. Expect small, fun-sized waves at best, with the occasional solid day if you’re lucky.

April: Autumn Arrives with More Power

April is a clear step up. The average swell height edges to 1.3m and the period jumps to 9.0s, meaning more powerful, organized lines. The swell direction distribution is excellent: east-southeast (21%), southeast (20%), and east (19%) combine to deliver consistent, favorable wave angles. Crucially, the wind becomes more favorable. Offshore directions (WSW to NW) now account for about 3% of the time, while the onshore north-northeast flow weakens. This is a prime month for chest-to-head-high waves with decent period, especially when a cold front clears the wind to the west.
