Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter brings the most consistent and high-quality surf to Praia do Silveira. As the South Atlantic storm track fires up, longer-period swell from the east-southeast becomes the norm, with average heights hovering around 1.3-1.4m and periods often pushing into the 9-10 second range. Critically, this is when offshore wind potential peaks. Cold fronts sweeping across southern Brazil generate favorable west to northwest winds, cleaning up the lines and creating the kind of shoulder-to-head-high waves that make this beach a destination. If you’re looking for pumping waves with a glassy surface, this is your window.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see a blend of conditions. April still enjoys a solid average period of 9.0s and a 30% chance of ideal wind, but the swell energy is slightly less consistent. September is the opposite: the swell is powerful (average 1.5m) and often from the optimal east-southeast, but the wind becomes more fickle. The North Atlantic high pressure starts to strengthen, bringing more north-northeast winds that can ruin the face. You’ll need to be patient and time your sessions perfectly around frontal passages to score the good ones.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

This is the extended summer period, dominated by tropical trade winds from the north-northeast quadrant. While there is still plenty of east to southeast swell (especially from distant storms), the onshore wind blows over 70% of the time, creating lumpy, choppy conditions. Wave periods dip to 8.0-8.6s on average, favoring groveling boards. The best chance for a clean wave comes during brief periods when a trailing cold front brings a southerly wind shift, but those windows are short and infrequent. Expect small, fun-sized waves at best, with the occasional solid day if you’re lucky.

August: Swell Peaks in Power, Wind More Fickle

August sees the highest average swell height of the year at 1.4m, but the period eases to 9.2s. Swell from east-northeast becomes more dominant (20%), and the southeast and south also contribute. The wind starts to shift back toward the Spring regime: offshore winds (WSW to NW) drop to about 4% of the time, and north-northeast winds ramp up again (over 27% from N and NNE combined). This means you’ll need to pick your days carefully. When the wind is right—usually after a cold front—the waves are pumping, head-high-plus with clean faces. The window is narrower than June, but the quality can be just as high.
