Best Surf Season (December - April)

From December through April, Punta Roca sits in the prime window of the Central American dry season. The North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens, driving consistent offshore trade winds from the N-NNE-NE quadrant that groom the swell lines beautifully. Swell periods average a solid 12-14 seconds, delivering powerful, long-period groundswells from the SSW to SW direction—perfectly aligned with the beach's SW exposure. Wave heights cluster in the fun-sized 0.5-1m range, with occasional pulses into the 1-1.5m sweet spot. This is when the lineup is most pristine and rideable.

Fair Surf Season (May, June, July, August, November)

As the dry season transitions into the wet season from May onward, the wind patterns shift dramatically. The trades weaken and onshore flow from the S-SSW-SW becomes more frequent, particularly from June through August. However, the swell kicks up a notch—average heights reach 1.0m and periods remain long (13-14 seconds), with a higher percentage of waves in the 1-1.5m range and even occasional 1.5-2m sets. November sees a slight return of favorable winds as the dry season begins to re-establish, making it a transitional month worth monitoring.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

September and October are the heart of the Panamanian rainy season, and Punta Roca feels it hard. Onshore winds from the W-WSW-SW dominate over 80% of the time, chopping up the swell and ruining wave quality. While the swell itself remains steady in height (0.5-1.5m) with long periods, the constant windblown conditions make it a struggle. Only the rare window of clean offshore conditions—usually associated with a passing cold front or a temporary high-pressure ridge—can salvage these months. Most days are best left to the windsurfers or for checking the swell on the horizon.

August: Summer's Last Stand

August is the wettest month in many parts of Panama, and Punta Roca feels the brunt. Swell remains 1.0m average height, 13.3-second period, with the highest percentage of 1-1.5m waves (37.0%) so far. The swell is split between SSW (95.1%) and a slight increase in SW (4.9%). But the wind is offshore only 25%—the second-lowest of the year. Onshore WSW winds dominate (20%), with W and SW also common. Expect messy, windblown conditions most days. However, the sheer power of the long-period swell can still produce some rideable waves if you're willing to battle the chop. Rare north wind days are gold.
