Best Surf Season (December - April)

From December through April, Punta Roca sits in the prime window of the Central American dry season. The North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens, driving consistent offshore trade winds from the N-NNE-NE quadrant that groom the swell lines beautifully. Swell periods average a solid 12-14 seconds, delivering powerful, long-period groundswells from the SSW to SW direction—perfectly aligned with the beach's SW exposure. Wave heights cluster in the fun-sized 0.5-1m range, with occasional pulses into the 1-1.5m sweet spot. This is when the lineup is most pristine and rideable.

Fair Surf Season (May, June, July, August, November)

As the dry season transitions into the wet season from May onward, the wind patterns shift dramatically. The trades weaken and onshore flow from the S-SSW-SW becomes more frequent, particularly from June through August. However, the swell kicks up a notch—average heights reach 1.0m and periods remain long (13-14 seconds), with a higher percentage of waves in the 1-1.5m range and even occasional 1.5-2m sets. November sees a slight return of favorable winds as the dry season begins to re-establish, making it a transitional month worth monitoring.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

September and October are the heart of the Panamanian rainy season, and Punta Roca feels it hard. Onshore winds from the W-WSW-SW dominate over 80% of the time, chopping up the swell and ruining wave quality. While the swell itself remains steady in height (0.5-1.5m) with long periods, the constant windblown conditions make it a struggle. Only the rare window of clean offshore conditions—usually associated with a passing cold front or a temporary high-pressure ridge—can salvage these months. Most days are best left to the windsurfers or for checking the swell on the horizon.

September: The Doldrums Set In

September is arguably the toughest month for surfing at Punta Roca. Offshore winds register a paltry 16%. The onshore flow from WSW (25.9%) and W (21%) is relentless, often strong enough to destroy wave face. Swell still pumps with average height 1.0m and period 13.3 seconds, but the 1-1.5m range accounts for 35.8% of the waves. The swell direction shifts slightly more west: SSW still leads (90.7%), but SW now makes up 9.3%. The waves have the power, but the surface is usually choppy and uninviting. Your best bet is waiting for a temporary high-pressure cell to bring a brief north wind—these are the diamonds in the rough.
