Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the fall and winter months, bringing consistent swell to Rockaway Beach. With average wave heights hovering around 1.3m and periods often in the 7-9 second range, this is prime time for solid, rippable waves. Cold fronts sweeping down from Canada generate offshore northwest winds, grooming the long-period groundswells that wrap into the SSE-facing beach. When a strong nor'easter sets up off the coast, we see powerful E to S swell lines that unload on the sandbars. The combination of frequent storms and higher percentage of offshore wind (28-31% ideal) makes this the go-to season for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the seasons transition, the Atlantic quiets down but still offers occasional windows of fun surf. April and May see average heights drop to 1.0-1.2m, with periods averaging 7.2-7.4s. The wind pattern becomes more erratic, with increased southerly flow during the day, but morning offshore breezes can still clean things up. September is the wildcard month, often lighting up with early-season hurricane swell that can deliver pumping, long-period waves. The average period jumps to 8.3s, the highest of the year, and ideal wind conditions peak at 31%. When a tropical system tracks favorably, Rockaway can go from flat to firing in a matter of hours.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with small, wind-affected surf typical of the season. Average heights plummet to 0.8-0.9m with periods around 7 seconds. The dominant swell comes from the SSE to S, which unfortunately aligns with onshore winds - southerly breezes that put a chop on the surface and close out waves. While the occasional south swell wrapping in can offer fun-sized waves, the overall consistency is poor. It's a great time for beginners to practice on smaller days, but for experienced surfers looking for punch, patience is key. The best chance for a good wave comes when a passing cold front or afternoon sea breeze from the northwest briefly cleans things up.

April: Spring Lull Begins

April sees the first real drop in overall energy. Average swell height falls to 1.2m, though period holds at 7.4s. Swell directions become more easterly – E (15.3%) and ESE (12.0%) dominate, with S (17.3%) still contributing. However, onshore S and SSW winds increase, reducing ideal wind to 26%. Mornings often offer cleaner conditions with light NW breezes, but the afternoons degrade quickly. For the dedicated surfer, early sessions can yield fun, rippable waves from long-period E swell before the southerly flow ruins the surface. It's a month of patience.
