Best Surf Season (October - March)

As the seasons transition, the Atlantic quiets down but still offers occasional windows of fun surf. April and May see average heights drop to 1.0-1.2m, with periods averaging 7.2-7.4s. The wind pattern becomes more erratic, with increased southerly flow during the day, but morning offshore breezes can still clean things up. September is the wildcard month, often lighting up with early-season hurricane swell that can deliver pumping, long-period waves. The average period jumps to 8.3s, the highest of the year, and ideal wind conditions peak at 31%. When a tropical system tracks favorably, Rockaway can go from flat to firing in a matter of hours.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with small, wind-affected surf typical of the season. Average heights plummet to 0.8-0.9m with periods around 7 seconds. The dominant swell comes from the SSE to S, which unfortunately aligns with onshore winds - southerly breezes that put a chop on the surface and close out waves. While the occasional south swell wrapping in can offer fun-sized waves, the overall consistency is poor. It's a great time for beginners to practice on smaller days, but for experienced surfers looking for punch, patience is key. The best chance for a good wave comes when a passing cold front or afternoon sea breeze from the northwest briefly cleans things up.

September: Hurricane Swell Season

September marks a dramatic shift. Average swell height climbs to 1.1m and period jumps to 8.3s – the highest of the year. Swell directions shift: ESE (20.2%) and E (15.5%) become dominant, with significant SE (18.7%) and SSE (14.5%) still present. Ideal wind peaks at 31%. This is prime time for hurricane and tropical storm swell. A well-tracked storm can send powerful, long-period E swell that wraps in perfectly with offshore NW winds from passing cold fronts. The result is clean, pumping waves in the 1-1.5m range and occasional bigger days. September often delivers the best surf of the year.
