Best Surf Season (December - March)

When the Australian monsoon retreats and the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts south, Sanur enters its prime window. From December through March, the prevailing wind pattern shifts to a dominant westerly flow, bringing clean offshore breezes (SW, WSW, W, WNW) that groom the swell into crisp, long-period lines. The average wave period hovers around 12-13 seconds, delivering powerful, rippable waves in the 1-2m range. This is when the magic happens: the Indian Ocean storm track fires up, sending consistent SSW/SW groundswell that wraps around the southern tip of Bali and arrives with serious push. Fair Surf Season (October - November & April)

October and November mark the transition from the dry southeast monsoon to the wet northwest monsoon. The offshore wind window starts to open, with ideal conditions occurring 22-38% of the time. The swell is there, though: the average height actually peaks at 2.0-2.2m with periods over 14 seconds, thanks to persistent Southern Ocean storms. But those beautiful long-period groundswells are accompanied by brutal, choppy winds that turn the lineup into a washing machine. Expect wind swell and messy conditions. Only the occasional lull in the trades or a rare westerly wind event can offer brief windows of rideable surf. This is the time to explore other breaks or wait for the monsoon shift.
