Best Surf Season (October - March)

Winter in the North Atlantic delivers the goods at Sao Torpes. From October through March, a relentless procession of extratropical storms tracks across the Atlantic, firing long-period groundswells that wrap into this West-South-West facing beach. Average wave heights consistently exceed 2.0m with periods averaging 11-13 seconds, providing powerful, ripable waves. The NAO often strengthens the Azores High, setting up crisp offshore winds from the east (NO, ONO, O, OSO) roughly 40-50% of the time — a high percentage that makes for clean, hollow conditions. Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder months of April and September see a noticeable drop in both swell intensity and wind consistency. The dominant swell shifts to NW and WNW directions, which are less than optimal for Sao Torpes as they often carry a northerly component.
