Best Surf Season (October - March)

Winter in the North Atlantic delivers the goods at Sao Torpes. From October through March, a relentless procession of extratropical storms tracks across the Atlantic, firing long-period groundswells that wrap into this West-South-West facing beach. Average wave heights consistently exceed 2.0m with periods averaging 11-13 seconds, providing powerful, ripable waves. The NAO often strengthens the Azores High, setting up crisp offshore winds from the east (NO, ONO, O, OSO) roughly 40-50% of the time — a high percentage that makes for clean, hollow conditions. This is the prime window for serious surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder months of April and September see a noticeable drop in both swell intensity and wind consistency. Average heights fall to 1.4-1.8m and periods shorten to 10-11s, though still offering fun, rideable waves. The dominant swell shifts to NW and WNW directions, which are less than optimal for Sao Torpes as they often carry a northerly component. Onshore NW winds become more common, but periodic easterly wind events still produce clean sessions. These months are a mixed bag — expect choppy days interspersed with solid, offshore groomed windows.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The thermal low off the Iberian Peninsula strengthens onshore northwesterly winds, which blast the beach over 70% of the time, rendering conditions choppy and poor. Surf quality is low, though the occasional southerly wind shift or dying NW breeze can produce brief windows of grovelable surf. This is a time for bigger boards and lowered expectations.

May: Low Energy Summer

May is when the summer doldrums set in. Average swell height falls to 1.5m and period to 10.0s. The swell is overwhelmingly from the NW (45.1%) and NNW (12.3%), with very little west component. This means most waves arrive with a significant north angle, reducing their quality at Sao Torpes. Wave heights mostly fall in the 1-2m range but often lack power. Ideal offshore wind frequency is just 25%. The prevailing N to NW winds (N at 12.9%, NW at 18.8%, NNW at 18.3%) are largely onshore or cross-shore.
