Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the most challenging period for Topanga. The North Pacific storm machine shuts down, and the predominant swells shift to SW and WSW — an ideal direction for the point. However, the wind pattern becomes hostile: offshore flow from the north drops to a meager 20-29% frequency. Instead, onshore winds from the S and SW dominate, ruining the surface quality on what could be otherwise promising south swell windows. Average swell height hovers around 0.8m, and while the period remains solid at 12-13s, the constant winds and frequent chop make conditions mediocre. The few windows of light or offshore flow can produce surprisingly good, rippable waves, but they are rare. Patience is key during the summer months.

October: The Transition Gains Momentum
