Best Surf Season (October - December)

As the northeast monsoon settles in, Vizag’s surf windows sharpen dramatically. October through December deliver the highest percentage of offshore winds—peaking at 62% in November—thanks to persistent flow from the N, NNW, and NW quadrants. Swell heights average a fun 1.0–1.1 m, with a clean 8–9 s period, and directions shift predominantly from the SE and SSE, which line up perfectly with the beach’s SSE exposure. This combination produces consistent, rippable waves with occasional punchy sets. The Bay of Bengal’s late-season cyclones can also spin up longer-period groundswell, adding power to the lineup. While the average height isn’t huge, the quality and regularity make this the prime window for a grovel or step-up.

Fair Surf Season (January - March)

Winter transitions into spring, and the surf remains rideable but starts to lose consistency. January still sees a solid 45% offshore wind frequency, mostly from the north, and swell heights around 0.7 m with a 9 s period—small and fun. February holds similar size but offshore winds drop to 30%, and the dominant swell shifts more toward the SSE (35.7%) and S (26.3%), still favorable. By March, the offshore window narrows to just 11% as the seasonal wind regime flips to SW and SSW onshores. Swell bumps to 0.9 m on average, but the S/SSW direction dominates (58.8% S), which is borderline optimal. Expect cleanest conditions early in the morning before the seabreeze kicks in. Still plenty of groveling potential on the right days.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

The summer monsoon brings a dramatic trade-off: bigger swell but lousy wind. From April through September, the southwest flow dominates, with onshore winds from SW and SSW blowing 70–90% of the time. Swell heights climb to 1.1–1.6 m, and periods hover around 9 s, but the primary swell direction is straight out of the south (S) and south-southwest (SSW)—directions that are marginal to poor at Vizag’s SSE-facing beach. April and May are the worst, with only 4–6% offshore winds. June and July offer slightly better odds (14–15% offshore), and August improves to 23%, but the wind is still cross-onshore most days. September shows a glimmer of hope with 32% offshore, signaling the transition back to the best season. During these months, the rare north wind can turn a messy, choppy day into a solid, pumping session—but you’ll need patience and a sharp eye on the forecast.

July: Ongoing Monsoon Grind

July mirrors June with an average swell height of 1.6 m and a slightly longer period of 9.2 s. Offshore wind improves marginally to 15%, but the dominant flow is still onshore SW (54.6%) and WSW (26.3%). Swell direction is nearly equal from SSW (43.1%) and S (43.0%), with some SW (9.1%) creeping in. The S/SSW angles are borderline; the SSW in particular wraps poorly and produces crumbly shoulders. Wave heights are substantial: 1–1.5 m (27.1%), 1.5–2 m (13.6%), and 2–2.5 m (5.5%). If a north wind blows (unlikely, but possible), this could be a heavy, firing day. Generally, a groveling month where you take what you can get.
