Best Surf Season (October - December)

As the northeast monsoon settles in, Vizag’s surf windows sharpen dramatically. October through December deliver the highest percentage of offshore winds—peaking at 62% in November—thanks to persistent flow from the N, NNW, and NW quadrants. Swell heights average a fun 1.0–1.1 m, with a clean 8–9 s period, and directions shift predominantly from the SE and SSE, which line up perfectly with the beach’s SSE exposure. This combination produces consistent, rippable waves with occasional punchy sets. The Bay of Bengal’s late-season cyclones can also spin up longer-period groundswell, adding power to the lineup. While the average height isn’t huge, the quality and regularity make this the prime window for a grovel or step-up.

Fair Surf Season (January - March)

Winter transitions into spring, and the surf remains rideable but starts to lose consistency. January still sees a solid 45% offshore wind frequency, mostly from the north, and swell heights around 0.7 m with a 9 s period—small and fun. February holds similar size but offshore winds drop to 30%, and the dominant swell shifts more toward the SSE (35.7%) and S (26.3%), still favorable. By March, the offshore window narrows to just 11% as the seasonal wind regime flips to SW and SSW onshores. Swell bumps to 0.9 m on average, but the S/SSW direction dominates (58.8% S), which is borderline optimal. Expect cleanest conditions early in the morning before the seabreeze kicks in. Still plenty of groveling potential on the right days.

Low Surf Season (April - September)

The summer monsoon brings a dramatic trade-off: bigger swell but lousy wind. From April through September, the southwest flow dominates, with onshore winds from SW and SSW blowing 70–90% of the time. Swell heights climb to 1.1–1.6 m, and periods hover around 9 s, but the primary swell direction is straight out of the south (S) and south-southwest (SSW)—directions that are marginal to poor at Vizag’s SSE-facing beach. April and May are the worst, with only 4–6% offshore winds. June and July offer slightly better odds (14–15% offshore), and August improves to 23%, but the wind is still cross-onshore most days. September shows a glimmer of hope with 32% offshore, signaling the transition back to the best season. During these months, the rare north wind can turn a messy, choppy day into a solid, pumping session—but you’ll need patience and a sharp eye on the forecast.

September: The Window Cracks Open

September sees a significant increase in offshore wind to 32%, largely from the NE (3.5%), NNE (2.4%), and N (1.8%). The swell height averages 1.3 m with a solid period of 9.7 s. Swell direction still favors S (63.9%) and SSW (19.6%), but the SSE (12.7%) and SE (0.9%) contributions grow. Wave heights are mostly 1–1.5 m (44.5%) and 0.5–1 m (10.9%), with some 1.5–2 m (8.0%) and 2–2.5 m (0.5%). The combination of improving wind and still-solid swell creates more rideable days. Late in the month, the first strong northeast swells can appear, offering longer-period, cleaner waves. A key transition month for the dedicated surfer.
