Best Surf Season (September - November)

The transition between the SW and NE monsoons creates the most favorable blend of conditions at Tago River. During September, the SW monsoon still delivers reliable offshore winds from the south, yet the first pulses of NE groundswell start to arrive, pushing average heights into the fun zone and periods lengthening past 10 seconds. October sees a dramatic increase in swell size as the NE monsoon strengthens, with long-period waves from the N through ENE quadrant becoming consistent. November is the premier month: solid 1.5-2.5m surf is common, and while the wind does become more northerly, the frequency of clean offshore days from the south is still significant enough to produce glassy peaks. This window offers the best trade-off between size and wind quality.

Fair Surf Season (December - March)

The core of the NE monsoon brings a relentless supply of powerful swell. December, January, and February boast the highest average wave heights of the year, often in the 1.5-2.5m range with period averages around 9-10 seconds. The challenge is the wind: the dominant northerly to northeasterly flow blows directly onshore, wrecking the wave face a majority of the time. Ideal offshore winds from the south are rare, occurring only 7-13% of the time. March sees a slight drop in swell size but the wind pattern remains unfavourable, making this a month of potential but frequent frustration. The few clean windows, often linked to a passing cold front or a high-pressure system retreating, can deliver pumping conditions that rival anywhere.

Low Surf Season (April - August)

As the NE monsoon weakens, the SW monsoon (Habagat) takes over. April is a transitional month with average heights dropping to 1.3m and wind quality starting to improve, but still only 16% ideal. By May, the wind shifts definitively to the south and southwest, providing offshore conditions over 39% of the time, but the swell production drops significantly as the fetch shifts away from the optimal NE quadrant. June, July, and August are dominated by small, wind-swell from the E and ENE, with average heights barely reaching 0.8m and periods around 9 seconds. The silver lining is the high probability of clean, offshores winds – up to 70% in August – making this a great period for longboarders, beginners, or anyone looking to log smooth, peelable waves on a smaller craft. Advanced surfers looking for power will struggle to find it.
