Average swell heights surge from 1.6m in October to a peak of 2.1m in January, accompanied by long periods of 10.5s to 12.0s — the definition of powerful, long-period groundswell. Dominant swells from the W, WNW, and NNW align perfectly with Thurso East's NNW-facing setup, delivering consistent, pitching lefts over the reef. Offshore winds from the south quadrant (S, SSW) occur frequently enough (26-31% ideal wind) to groom the waves into pristine condition, especially when high pressure ridges in from the south. Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transitional months where the Atlantic is either winding down from winter or revving up for the next season. In April, average swell heights drop to 1.4m with periods around 10.3s, and the wind is ideal 31% of the time. The swell remains rideable, especially from the NNW and WNW, but the overall energy is less consistent. September marks the return of autumn storm activity, with average heights climbing back to 1.3m and periods to 9.8s, and an ideal wind window of 33%. You'll find fun, solid waves mixed with smaller days — a great time for a quiver of performance shortboards.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a drastic lull in swell activity across the entire North Atlantic. From May through August, average wave heights hover between 0.9m and 1.1m, and periods drop below 9s into the average, punchy, rideable range. Long-period groundswell becomes a rare treat. The wind is ideal 28-33% of the time, but the small, groveling conditions mean you'll need a fish or a foamie to have fun. Dominant swell directions shift to the W and WNW, but the lack of size and power makes this period better suited for longboarders and beginners seeking a leisurely session rather than charging.
