Few lineups command as much reverence—or as many surfers—as Malibu’s First Point. This iconic righthand pointbreak unfolds over a mix of boulders and sand, delivering the kind of smooth, sculpted walls that have made it a global benchmark for performance surfing. Despite the perpetual crowds, First Point remains the most consistent of the Malibu waves, offering pristine lines that suit everything from longboards to high-performance shortboards. When conditions align, the wave’s shape approaches perfection—a dream canvas for any style. Just down the lineup, Second Point and Third Point provide separate take-off zones that, under the right swell and tide, fire off faster, more hollow sections for those seeking a more critical ride.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (August - October)

As summer transitions into autumn, First Point hits its stride. The North Pacific high-pressure system settles in and the wave window shifts into the south/south-southwest quadrant, which lines up perfectly with the SSE-facing beach. Mean swell heights hover around 0.7-0.8m (2.5ft), but periods stay in the 12.5-13s range, meaning plenty of long-period, rideable lines. Ideal offshore winds occur 45-54% of the time, often thanks to early-morning north-northeast drainage flow before the sea breeze kicks in. This is the most consistent combination of swell angle and clean surface conditions all year.
