Best Surf Season (May - June & October)
Tocones is a north-facing beach break where the ideal recipe calls for N to NNW groundswell and a SSW to SW offshore wind. The climatological reality, however, is that the regional wave and wind roses are dominated by E/ESE trades. These produce short-period windswell averaging only 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) most of the year, while true N-NNW swell is essentially absent from the annual data. As a result, the surf calendar is less about big seasonal energy and more about wind texture. The best months are May, June and October, when favorable wind percentages reach their annual highs (46%, 44% and 42%) and the trade winds become less aggressive. Swell size is still small, but the cleaner surface turns those small E/ESE waves into genuinely ridable, often longboard-friendly surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transitional months with modest but notable improvements in wind quality. April offers a more consistent ESE swell signal with 34% favorable wind, while September brings 37% favorable wind plus the warmest water of the year at 29.2°C. In both months, the average wave height sits near 2.3-2.6ft (0.7-0.8m) with periods around 6.0-6.1s, so the surf is small but more presentable. These are good months for groveling boards, summer shortboards, and longboards when the wind cooperates.
Low Surf Season (November - March & July - August)
The most challenging windows for surf quality are November through March and July through August. In the winter half, average heights climb slightly to 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m) and periods reach 6.2s, but favorable wind drops to between 22% and 29%, and E/ENE cross-shore flow dominates the surface. In July and August, the trade winds crank even harder, with E winds blowing 47-55% of the time, creating lumpy, short-period conditions. Without a strong N-NNW groundswell-which barely appears in the climatological data-Tocones is left with small, wind-affected waves that require patience and a low-expectation mindset.
