Express Point seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

As autumn settles in, the Southern Ocean storm track shifts north and starts firing long-period groundswell at this south-southwest-facing corner of Australia. From April through September, average wave heights climb from around 5ft (1.5m) to a solid 5.6ft (1.7m), while swell periods sit in the powerful 12-13s range. The wind regime also improves dramatically: the north to north-northwest quadrant becomes the dominant synoptic flow, giving Express Point clean offshore conditions anywhere from 24 to 31 percent of the time. The result is consistent, lined-up SW and WSW groundswell with chilly water and plenty of punch. This is the time to plan your trip.

Fair Surf Season (March, October, November)

The shoulder months give you enticing tastes of the main season. March sees longer-period autumn swells beginning to build, while October still holds late-winter size before the storm track retreats. November is a step down, but the Southern Ocean still pushes through intermittent S/SW swells. The trade-off is wind: offshore windows occur only 18-24 percent of the time, and W/SW onshore winds mix into the pattern more often. If a strong low aligns with a N/NW wind, Express Point can still deliver very good waves.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Australian summer presses the pause button. High pressure over the Bight and a southward-shifted storm track mean average heights shrink to around 4.6ft (1.4m) with periods dropping to 11-11.5s. The swell direction remains dominated by SW and SSW, so there is always some background energy, but the wind does the damage: ideal offshore wind drops to just 15-18 percent, and the daily onshore sea-breeze pattern out of the SSE-SSW-SW quadrant turns surfaces bumpy. Expect small, softer summer surf with occasional dawn sessions when a light offshore breeze lines up the fun-sized peaks.
