Best Surf Season (April - September)

As the southern autumn deepens into winter, the Southern Ocean storm track shifts northward and Point Leo begins to feel the pulse of powerful lows sweeping across the Roaring Forties. Average swell heights climb from 1.4m (4.6ft) in summer to a peak of 1.7m (5.6ft) in August and September, while swell periods lengthen to 12.5-12.9s, signaling a rise in clean, long-period groundswell. Critically, the chance of offshore winds from the north quadrant also peaks during these months, with ideal wind percentages reaching 21-24%. This is when the south-facing shoreline of Point Leo genuinely lights up, with groomed lines and consistent 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) surf.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

March and October mark the transition zones of the autumn and spring equinoxes. The ocean is still full of energy from either the decaying winter or building summer storm tracks, but the wind patterns become increasingly fickle. March sees the tail end of summer sea breezes mixed with early westerly frontal systems, while October retains solid SW swells from the receding winter pattern as offshore winds start to waiver. Ideal wind blows a moderate 16-18% of the time, so you have to be sharp with your session selection. When a dawn NW wind lines up with a late-season S/SW groundswell, Point Leo can still fire.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the quiet season for Point Leo. The Southern Ocean storm track retreats poleward, average swell heights drop back to 1.4m (4.6ft) and periods fall to 11-11.5s, meaning less organized energy. More importantly, the prevailing synoptic pattern brings a relentless succession of southerly to southwesterly sea breezes that blow straight onshore for a south-facing beach. Offshore wind only blows 12-14% of the time, and the daily thermal seabreeze often turns clean dawn conditions into bumpy afternoon chop. It's a good time for a wetsuit and small-wave practice, but consistent quality is hard to come by.
