August: The Big Swell Month

August is statistically the biggest month of the year for Point Leo. Average swell height reaches 1.7m (5.6ft), and the period peaks at 12.8s, indicating a high frequency of long-period groundswell. The direction mix is similar to July but with even more WSW (23.1%) and W (9.6%) influence, alongside SW at 36.1%. This results in a strong westerly component to the swell, which means increased consistency at the break as multiple westerly -angled swells compete. The percentage of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) and 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) waves is now substantial, offering some of the most powerful surf of the year. Offshore wind remains strong at 21% ideal, with NNW (22.0%), NW (12.1%), and WNW (11.4%) leading the way. However, the wind rose also shows a slight increase in westerly and southwesterly flows compared to July, so the most exposed spots can get wind-affected. Water temp is bottomed out at 12.5°C, air temp averages 11.4°C, and precipitation is at its highest at 2.47 mm/day. August is the month to chase the biggest, most powerful swells when the morning offshore lines up - it can be truly epic.
