October: Shoulder Season Shake-Up

October is a genuine mixed bag at Werri. The average swell height remains steady at 5ft (1.6m), but the average period drops to 8.6s as the long-period winter groundswell becomes less frequent. E/NE and E/SE swells regain dominance - NE, ENE and E combine for more than 34% of the energy, while the S/SSE lobe is still present at around 30%. This is the classic setup for late-season east coast lows, which can generate solid 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) E/SE swell and fun surf, though those same lows often bring rain and persistent onshore winds. That explains the drop in ideal-wind percentage to 45%, with offshore W-NW flow reduced to around 24% compared with the winter months. Water temperature is still cool at 18.1°C, air temperatures average 15.5°C, and rainfall is moderate at 2.18mm/day. October surfers need to be opportunistic: when a high-pressure system clears the coast and turns winds offshore, the E/SE swells can produce some of Werri's most underrated sessions.
