The North Atlantic's winter fury delivers the goods to Bathtub Beach from October through March. Frequent extratropical cyclones rolling off the US East Coast generate consistent, medium-to-large groundswells from the NE to E quadrants, with average wave heights sitting around 1.2m and periods often reaching the 8-second mark. When a low-pressure system stalls off the Carolinas, we can see pumping 1.5-2.5m waves with enough power to turn this normally mellow sandbar into a proper reef-like wall. The key is a W to SW offshore wind, which cleans up the faces and allows for long, rippable waves. With ideal wind conditions occurring 22-26% of the time, these months offer the most reliable window for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

During the shoulder months of April, May, and September, the Atlantic's pulse eases but still manages to produce rewarding sessions. Average swell height dips to around 1.0m, and periods hover near 7.5-8.2s. The dominant swell direction remains NE to ENE, but the fetch is often shorter and less organized than in winter. Offshore wind frequency drops to 18-22%, meaning you'll have to pick your days more carefully. Tropical systems can occasionally throw in a late-summer or early-fall swell, bringing sudden bursts of clean energy. These months reward the patient surfer who is willing to check the forecast and wait for a good window.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer heat turns Bathtub Beach into a classic Florida flat spell. Average swell height bottoms out at a meager 0.6m, and average periods drop below 7 seconds, often resulting in choppy, short-period windswell. The dominant swell direction shifts to the E and ESE, but these waves barely tickle the sandbar. Onshore easterly winds prevail, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only 12-17% of the time – and even then, the fetch is pitiful. If you're desperate, a passing thunderstorm can briefly flip the wind offshore, but the resulting waves are weak and gutless. This is the time to travel or pick up a different hobby. However, if a hurricane wanders close enough, all bets are off – but that's a rare gamble.
