Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machine roars to life as cold fronts and low-pressure systems march across the continent. For Hobe Sound, this is prime time. Average swell heights sit around 1.2m with periods pushing 8 seconds, meaning consistent, fun-sized waves. The dominant swell directions are from the NNE through ENE, which hit the beach's east-northeast exposure perfectly. The catch is that these same directions also bring onshore winds over 70% of the time. The magic happens when a high-pressure system stalls over the Southeast US, delivering light SSW to W breezes as the swell peaks. Ideal wind percentages hover in the 14-22% range, but when it lines up, you get clean, rippable waist-to-head-high waves with occasional pumping sets.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transition months offer a mixed bag. April and May see average swell heights drop to 0.9-1.0m and periods shorten slightly, but the trade-off is a higher frequency of lighter winds from the south and west. September is a wildcard: hurricane season injects a chance of long-period, powerful ENE swells, yet average conditions still have that summer smallness. You'll find small, fun-sized waves most days, but with a better shot at offshore winds from the west. It's a gamble, but the rewards can be surprising.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer flatness sets in with a vengeance. Swell heights average a meager 0.6m and periods dip below 7s, leaving mostly choppy, messy conditions. The swell direction shifts stubbornly E to ESE, which is far from ideal for the spot. On top of that, the wind is almost always from the east or southeast – right onshore. With ideal wind percentages below 15%, you're stuck trying to grovel on micro waves. The only saving grace is an occasional distant tropical storm, but it's a long shot. This is the season to repair your board and dream of winter.
