Best Surf Season (December - March)

Diego Garcia's most consistent surf window falls during the northern-hemisphere winter and early spring, when the monsoon trough shifts and the atoll sits on the fringes of the equatorial westerlies. During December, January, February and March, the ideal wind statistic climbs to 38-49 percent, driven by a much higher frequency of WSW-W-WNW flow. That is the closest the island comes to a clean offshore setup for this east-facing coastline. Average swell heights sit around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods of 10.8-11.7s, so the waves are solid and powerful rather than oversized. While true NW-W-WSW swell remains a relatively small slice of the spectrum, the winter months do see more of that favourable westerly energy than any other period, especially in January and February. This is the season to pick your windows and search for a groomed, walled-up wave on the island's reefs.
