It’s a spot that rewards a little daring—powerful, hollow waves that can light up with genuine intensity when the conditions align. Not every day delivers, but when it does, Beacons offers a thrilling, sometimes harrowing, ride. The wave comes alive best on a Southwest swell, holding size from 2 to 6 feet (roughly 0.6 to 1.8 meters). When the swell shifts more southeast, expect steep, closeout-prone peaks over the shallow coral sections. It breaks right with authority, spitting out deep barrels that demand commitment, especially as the tide drops. This isn’t a forgiving wave; the reef lurks just beneath, making it far better suited for skilled intermediates who can read the ocean’s nuances and handle its punch. For clean, groomed faces, look for a solid North wind—it polishes the surface beautifully. Tides are surprisingly flexible here; Beacons can work on low, mid, or high tide, offering a window of opportunity across the day. But don’t let the flexibility fool you: confidence and experience are essential. On its best days, Beacons packs a wallop that will test your timing, your nerve, and your love for the raw side of surfing.

The surf year at Beacons follows the pulse of the Indian Ocean monsoons. When the north-east monsoon grips the Maldives from December through March, the beach faces south but the wind finally comes from the north - a perfect offshore setup that turns modest Southern Ocean groundswell into clean, rippable reef waves. When the south-west monsoon takes over from May into October, the same south-facing exposure is now staring straight into a wet, onshore wind, and the surf quality collapses even as the swell size peaks. The transition months of April and November offer a moody in-between where the potential is high but the wind is unreliable.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

From December to March, the north-east monsoon establishes a steady, dry offshore flow from the N through NE quadrant. Average wave heights sit in the fun-to-solid range of 3.5-4ft (1.1-1.2m) with long 10-11s periods, and ideal surfing wind is present 57-72% of the time. The south swell window is active enough to provide consistent SSE, S and SSW groundswell, while the offshore winds keep the surface smooth and glassy. This is the closest Beacons comes to consistent, world-class Maldives perfection.
