Castaways offers a quintessentially laid-back escape, set against the backdrop of a stunning, deserted island that feels a world away from the typical lineups. This outer reef break is praised for its predictability, delivering clean, mostly right-hand waves that peel over a bed of dead coral. While the vibe remains chilled, the end section can get critically shallow—especially on a lower tide—so keeping an eye on the water level is key. The spot truly lights up with a southeast swell, handling waves around 3 feet, though it also picks up energy from the south and southwest. For the best conditions, you’ll want a solid north wind to groom the faces. Castaways is remarkably tide-flexible, offering rideable waves at low, mid, and high tide, making it a versatile choice for intermediate surfers looking to stretch their legs. The setup is consistent enough to keep sessions rewarding without the intensity of more advanced breaks. Just to each side, you’ll find “No Names” lefts—fun and mostly empty, adding a little variety if you need a change of pace. If you’re after uncrowded, decent waves with a mellow rhythm and a postcard-perfect setting, Castaways is well worth the paddle out.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The Maldives' surf season peaks during the northeast monsoon, when the wind shifts to the offshore quadrant for the south-facing beach at Castaways. High pressure over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian subcontinent funnels dry, modulated N to NW winds across the islands, while the Indian Ocean starts sending consistent south swells into the chain. During this stretch, the average swell height sits at a fun 1.1-1.2m (3.5-4ft), with periods in the powerful 10-11.3s long-period range. Wave directions are dominated by SE, SSE, S and SSW - exactly what Castaways is exposed to. The result is clean, rippable, and remarkably consistent surf.
