Shangri-la

Tucked away on the private island of Viligili in the southernmost Addu Atoll, Shangri-la offers an exclusive slice of luxury reef-surfing—provided you can get past the resort gates. While the Shangri-la resort caters to those seeking high-end comfort, the surf access is understandably restricted for non-guests, making it a low-key, members-only wave for resort clientele. This spot is a finesse-driven right reef break that comes alive when small, clean south-west swells roll in during the southern hemisphere summer. It wraps nicely along the east coast when the swell direction shifts from the SW or even the east, delivering playful, rifling waves that can handle heights as modest as 2 feet (0.6 meters). The magic happens when a light north-easterly breeze feathers the faces, grooming the lines over a shallow bed of dead coral—meaning one wrong move can leave a mark. This is strictly expert territory; confidence in your abilities is non-negotiable. Tides here are forgiving, with rideable waves across low, mid, and high stages, though the window of best shape can shift with swell direction. Best Surf Season (December - April)

The surf year at Shangri-la is ruled by the Indian Ocean monsoon. From December through April the northeast monsoon locks in offshore and cross-offshore breezes from the west, west-northwest, northwest and north-northwest, producing the cleanest conditions of the year. Wave heights average around 4ft (1.2m) to 4.5ft (1.4m), with periods climbing from 9.9s in December to a peak of 11.6s in April. Ideal winds range from 49 to 58 percent during these months, and the swell windows from E-ESE-SE-SSE are well represented. It is not the biggest surf of the year, but it is the most consistent and most rippable.
