Best Surf Season (October - March)

Sylt is a wind-sensitive, west-facing North Sea sand island, and its surf year is shaped by the battle between Atlantic lows and Scandinavian high pressure. The best season runs from October through March, when the North Atlantic storm track is most active and average swell heights climb to 4-6ft (1.3-1.8m) with periods in the punchy, rideable 6-9s window. Expect a diet of NW, W, WSW and WNW swell - exactly what the island's west-facing banks need. The catch is wind: onshore W/SW flow can ruin many days, so the trick is to wait for offshore easterly winds from the ENE-E-SE quadrant. The NAO is the metronome: positive winters bring more storm-generated westerly swell, while negative phases can bring cold, clean easterly flow but less size. Either way, this is the prime window for the region's best waves.
