March: Strong SSW Swell and a Transition Toward Spring Conditions

March marks the beginning of a shift in the swell distribution, with SSW energy becoming the clear leader at 42%. Combined with SW at 30%, WSW at 15.9% and W at 10.1%, essentially all incoming wave energy sits inside the favorable exposure window. The height distribution ticks upward as well: while 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) remains dominant at 65.6%, the 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) class jumps to over 30%, enough to push the average swell height to 0.9m (3ft), and the average period lengthens to 13.5s, giving the surf more body and push.

This is a transition month, and the wind field becomes less reliable. Although NW at 29.2% and WNW at 19.9% still dominate, the percentage of ideal surfing winds drops to 27% as more WSW and W flow mixes in while thermal gradients strengthen. Air temperatures rise to 22.6°C, water holds at 22.4°C, and precipitation drops to nearly zero at 0.09 mm/day. For the surfer, March offers some of the best long-period, chest-to-head-high potential of the winter/spring shoulder, but you will need to pick your windows carefully as the onshore influence increases.
