Best Surf Season (September - November)

Fall is the undisputed sweet spot at Monobegawakakou. The North Pacific transitions into a more active pattern while the South Pacific still sends consistent long-period groundswells. Typhoon remnants often track favorably, delivering solid S to SSE swell with periods pushing 10-14 seconds. More importantly, the wind regime shifts dramatically: high-pressure systems settle over Japan, driving frequent N to NW offshore breezes that groom the surface to perfection. October sees the highest percentage of ideal wind at 56%, making it the most reliable month for clean, powerful surf. This window offers the best combination of size, period, and glassy conditions.

Fair Surf Season (December - February & March - May)

Winter months bring moderate swell potential from North Pacific storms, but average heights hover around 0.6-0.8m with periods in the 8-9 second range, providing fun-sized, rippable waves. Offshore wind frequency is decent (30-44%), especially when a strong Siberian high builds, allowing for clean sessions between cold fronts. Spring sees a gradual decline in swell consistency and period as the North Pacific storm track weakens. March and April still offer a decent chance at clean waves with offshore winds around 44% of the time, but the swell becomes more windswell-driven and less powerful. May marks the transition into summer, with shorter periods (7.7s) and increasing onshore flow, but occasional south swell pulses can still deliver fun waves.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the most challenging period for quality surf at Monobegawakakou. While average swell heights actually peak (0.9-1.1m) due to persistent S-SSE swell from the Pacific trade wind belt and occasional typhoons, the wind regime flips dominantly onshore. The percentage of ideal offshore wind drops to 27-36% as thermal lows and monsoon flow drive consistent SW to SSW breezes straight into the beach. The result is often messy, wind-affected surf with short-period chop (8-9s). However, tropical cyclone activity can bring intervals of larger, cleaner swell if the storm track aligns with favorable wind shifts. For the average surfer, consistency and quality are at their lowest, making this the low season for serious wave riding.
