Punta Brava is a raw, reef-laden left-hander tucked inside a small rocky bay that’s not for the faint of heart. This spot routinely pumps a few feet bigger than its neighbors, filtering out all but the most seasoned wave riders. The absence of any real paddling channel and a nasty field of sharp rocks makes the entry and exit a dicey proposition—respect and caution are non-negotiable, especially when approaching from the land side. Waves here peel predominantly left with the occasional right, pitching over an uneven reef bottom. Punta Brava comes alive on a south to southwest swell, handling faces from about 3 feet on up. Low to mid tide windows are the sweet spot, offering the best shape and depth. When a north wind blows, the surface cleans up, delivering quality, expert-only surf that rewards those with the skills and the nerve. Tackling the paddle out from shore? Booties are a must to negotiate the rocky bottom. If you’d rather skip the risk of getting caught inside on the way out, many surfers opt for a boat, allowing a direct drop-in without the hair-raising channel gauntlet. The surrounding area is dotted with other reefs and beaches, giving you plenty of backup options when you need a break from this demanding break.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - April)

During the heart of the dry season, Punta Brava benefits from a powerful combination of Southern Hemisphere groundswell and offshore northeasterly trade winds. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) drifts south, allowing a stronger pressure gradient to set in across the tropical Eastern Pacific. The result is a remarkably clean, glassy line-up with waist-to-chest high SSW swell rolling in on a consistent 12-14 second period. Average surf heights hover around 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.6ft), but the long-period energy makes every wave feel more powerful than the size suggests. December through April is the prime window for Punta Brava when the wind is ideal 46-55% of the time.
