Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the surfing calendar at Prainha falls between November and March, when the South Atlantic high-pressure system shifts southward, allowing for a higher frequency of offshore winds from the west and northwest quadrants. While average swell heights hover in the fun-sized 0.5-1.5m range and periods average a punchy 7-8 seconds, the critical factor is wind quality. During these months, ideal offshore conditions occur up to 13% of the time — the highest of the year. Swell direction is predominantly from the east, but with a clean offshore breeze, these waves can offer surprisingly rippable walls. The challenge remains that the majority of days still see onshore winds, so timing is everything. When the stars align, Prainha delivers a surprisingly fun surf experience.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

April and October represent the transition months, where the trade wind regime begins to weaken or strengthen. In April, average swell height increases to 1.0m with a period of 8.1s, and the easterly swell becomes more powerful, but ideal wind drops to just 7%. October sees a similar pattern with 1.1m swell at 8.1s and ideal wind at only 6%. During these months, the window for clean surf narrows further. However, occasional strong frontal systems sweeping up from the Southern Ocean can deliver longer-period swell from the south-southeast, which, while not perfectly aligned, can wrap into the beach with some energy. The wind is the main spoiler, often blowing strongly from the east and southeast, chopping up the surface. For the patient surfer, early mornings can offer brief pockets of clarity before the sea breeze sets in.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, Prainha enters its least reliable period for quality waves. This is the heart of the southern hemisphere winter, and while the South Atlantic roars to life with stronger extratropical storms, the swell that reaches this east-facing beach is almost entirely from the east and southeast — directly onshore directions. Average wave heights climb to 1.2-1.3m and periods stretch to 8.4-8.6s, promising power, but the accompanying wind is overwhelmingly from the eastern quadrants. Ideal offshore wind drops to a paltry 4-8% of the time. This means that even when the swell is pumping, the waves are typically accompanied by choppy, messy conditions — a classic case of bigger but uglier. The constant trade winds lock in a windswell regime that makes clean faces a rare commodity. If you must surf during these months, look for brief windows of lighter wind or seek shelter at more protected breaks.
