Best Surf Season (May - August)
The austral winter sets the South African coastline alight, and Cave Rock feels the force of this seasonal shift in both swell quality and wind. As the South Atlantic high pressure system strengthens and cold fronts migrate further north across the Southern Ocean, the average wave period climbs into the 10.4-10.8 second range, and the frequency of ideal offshore winds (W, WNW, NW, NNW) peaks at 55% in June and 51% in July. While the truly optimal W and SW groundswell remains rare at this SE-facing reef, the increased southern component in the swell direction during these months - with S and SSE swells dominating the wave rose - means the most consistent, well-shaped lines of the year. Expect solid 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) surf, groomed by a side-offshore breeze that keeps the reef clean and the walls holding up. This is the window when Cave Rock evolves from a summer mush machine into a proper point and reef set-up.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
The shoulder months of April and September offer workable to occasionally fun surf. April sees ideal wind frequencies jump to 36%, while average periods reach 10.0s - a hint of the winter swell train. Swell direction is still largely E through SSE, but a strong S component (14.9% in April, 19.4% in September) provides better lines than the summer months. September marks the beginning of the downward transition, as NE winds begin to reassert themselves and ideal wind drops to 27%. These months are the classic 'risk-reward' windows: catch a late-season cold front and you might score clean, long-period S swell with light westerly breeze, but on average, expect a mix of semi-choppy trade swell and the odd clean day.
Low Surf Season (October - March)
From late spring through summer, Cave Rock falls under the dominance of the subtropical high pressure cell. NE winds blow with a vengeance, occupying 22-26% of the wind rose, while cross-onshore SSW winds also become a major feature (16-20%). Ideal offshore flow from the western quadrant drops to a paltry 15-20%, which is bad news for wave quality. The swell still averages 1.6-1.8m (5.2-5.9ft), but wave periods sink to 8.7-9.4s - a sign of windswell and short-period local sea, not groundswell. The wave rose becomes filled with E and ESE energy, blowing straight out of the trade wind machine, creating crumbly, sectiony and often blown-out conditions. This is the South African surf doldrums, where you take any rippable wave and be grateful for the warm 23-25°C water. The occasional S/SSW pulse, generated by a rare frontal incursion, is the only real hope for quality.
