April: The Pre-Winter Surge

April is where Cave Rock starts to wake from its summer slumber. The average swell height stays at 1.7m (5.6ft), but the period jumps to a healthy 10.0s, and the ideal wind frequency leaps to 36% - the highest since the previous winter. NE winds are still present at 18.4%, but the wind rose now shows a much stronger westerly influence: WSW (2.9%), W (1.8%), WNW (1.5%), NW (1.7%) and NNW (5.0%). Swell direction shifts in tandem - SSE swells now take 20.0%, S swells 14.9%, and even SSW sneaks in at 1.0%. The 1.5-2m and 2-2.5m bands are especially well represented in the S and SSE sectors, meaning there is genuine size and power in the water. Water temps drop noticeably to 24.5°C, air to 23.4°C, and rain eases to 2.19mm/day. This is the month of transition - light offshore winds and consistent mid-period swell combine to give Cave Rock its first truly clean, bankable days of the year. A good 2ft or 3ft barrel is definitely within the realms of possibility.
