Best Surf Season (March - May)

Autumn delivers the sweet spot at Bogan River. As the Southern Ocean cranks up its storm machine, average swell heights climb to a solid 1.6–1.9m with long-period energy (12.8–13.0s) that really wraps into this WSW-facing beach. The wind gods also play nice, with offshore breezes from the NE to ESE quadrant blowing 26–28% of the time. This combo means more clean, rippable walls and fewer blown-out messes. March through May is when you want to book your trip.

Fair Surf Season (June - August)

Winter keeps the size pumping at 1.9m, but the trade-off is a drop in ideal wind percentages to 20–23%. The prevailing SW swell continues to pour in, but onshore winds from the W and SW become more frequent, especially during frontal passages. When a high-pressure system parks over the Tasman Sea, it can deliver those coveted offshore conditions – just be ready to work around the lows. The waves retain their power and period (12.7–13.0s), so when the window opens, it fires.

Low Surf Season (September - February)

Spring and summer bring a mixed bag. Swell heights gradually drop from 1.9m in September to 1.4m in January, and the ideal wind percentage bottoms out at 15–19% in late spring. September through November still have size but are plagued by onshore SW winds, making it hard to find clean conditions. December through February sees smaller surf (1.4–1.5m) with shorter periods (11.7–12.0s), though the offshore wind window opens a bit more in February (27% ideal). If you're after fun-sized waves without the crowd, early summer can offer sneaky fun, but don't expect the consistent quality of autumn.

December: Summer Kickoff, Smaller But Cleaner?

December brings the dawn of summer, with average swell height falling to 1.5m and period shortening to 11.7s. Swell direction shows a strong SW component (41.7%) and WSW (34.2%), with a bit more W (10.6%). The wind ideal percentage nudges up to 19%, with offshore NE to ENE winds blowing combined ~13% of the time. The onshore wind fraction remains high, but the wind tends to be lighter overall, often under 20kph. This means more frequent clean surface conditions, even if the swell is smaller. Fun-sized waves in the 1–1.5m range are common from both SW and WSW. December offers the best chance for long, peel-able waves without the winter crowd – a great month for logging or groveling.
