Best Surf Season (March - May)

Autumn delivers the sweet spot at Bogan River. As the Southern Ocean cranks up its storm machine, average swell heights climb to a solid 1.6–1.9m with long-period energy (12.8–13.0s) that really wraps into this WSW-facing beach. The wind gods also play nice, with offshore breezes from the NE to ESE quadrant blowing 26–28% of the time. This combo means more clean, rippable walls and fewer blown-out messes. March through May is when you want to book your trip.

Fair Surf Season (June - August)

Winter keeps the size pumping at 1.9m, but the trade-off is a drop in ideal wind percentages to 20–23%. The prevailing SW swell continues to pour in, but onshore winds from the W and SW become more frequent, especially during frontal passages. When a high-pressure system parks over the Tasman Sea, it can deliver those coveted offshore conditions – just be ready to work around the lows. The waves retain their power and period (12.7–13.0s), so when the window opens, it fires.

Low Surf Season (September - February)

Spring and summer bring a mixed bag. Swell heights gradually drop from 1.9m in September to 1.4m in January, and the ideal wind percentage bottoms out at 15–19% in late spring. September through November still have size but are plagued by onshore SW winds, making it hard to find clean conditions. December through February sees smaller surf (1.4–1.5m) with shorter periods (11.7–12.0s), though the offshore wind window opens a bit more in February (27% ideal). If you're after fun-sized waves without the crowd, early summer can offer sneaky fun, but don't expect the consistent quality of autumn.

October: Spring Transition, Wind Battles

October maintains the 1.9m average swell but the period drops to 12.7s. Swell is almost equally split between SW (35.1%) and WSW (31.6%), with W at 10.6%. Wind conditions deteriorate further: only 16% ideal offshore. Onshore winds from SW (16.6%) and WSW (14.0%) are prevalent, often bringing choppy conditions. However, the onset of spring can bring more variable wind patterns, and occasional high-pressure systems stall to the north, producing light ENE flow. When that happens, the waves can be clean and powerful. The water is still cool, but the days are getting longer – it's a transitional month that requires patience.
