Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic really flexes its muscles during these months, feeding Bude with consistent, powerful groundswells. Average wave heights consistently exceed 1.7m and periods average 9.3 seconds or more, meaning the west-facing beaches are dominated by long-period, heavy lines that can barrel on the right day. However, the prevailing westerly wind regime often brings onshore conditions straight out of the bad wind window (WSW-WNW). The key is to time your sessions with the passage of high pressure, which can draw in favourable offshore winds from the east through south (ONO, O, OSO, SO). When the synoptic setup aligns, the combination of solid groundswell and clean, offshore wind creates truly epic conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

These transitional months offer a more manageable but still enjoyable surf scene. Average swell heights drop to between 1.1-1.3m, with periods around 8.7-9.5s, providing plenty of fun, rippable waves. The wind patterns become more variable, and although the ideal wind percentage hovers around 25-29%, the frequency of strong westerly winds decreases compared to winter. April and May see more light wind days and the first hints of summer high pressure slides, delivering clean glassy mornings. September is a wildcard as the Atlantic begins to wake up again; early autumn lows can send renewed swell while the wind still holds in a more favourable quadrant.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer doldrums settle in hard across Bude. Average wave heights sit around the 1.0-1.1m mark and periods drop below 8 seconds, meaning most of the energy is short-period, windswell driven by local sea breezes and the dominant westerly airflow. The ideal wind percentage plummets to 15-19%, as onshore SW-W winds blow relentlessly. The swell direction is overwhelmingly W-WSW, which is both the optimal swell direction and the bad wind direction, creating a frustrating paradox: there is often swell but it is almost always chopped up by onshore wind. Micro-surf, grovel sessions on the inside are the norm, but the occasional weak cold front can inject a few days of cleaner conditions. This is the time for exploring sheltered spots or taking the break.

June: Lull Season Settles In

June marks the true start of the low surf season at Bude. Average swell height is 1.1m and the average period drops to 8.3s – short-period, weak energy. The swell direction remains heavily W (41.5%) and WSW (26.0%), with a huge share of waves in the 0.5-1m range (18% from W alone). The wind statistics are discouraging for surfe: ideal wind percentage falls to just 19%. Onshore winds from SW-W make up over 30% of the observations, and they are often moderate (10-20kph). The east and south-easterly offshore winds are less frequent and often light. This is a month for the dedicated logger or the beginner looking for small, forgiving waves. The occasional low pressure passing far north can generate a modest groundswell, but it will most likely come with onshore wind. If you do see a high pressure system settle over the UK, expect clean but tiny conditions.
