Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic really flexes its muscles during these months, feeding Bude with consistent, powerful groundswells. Average wave heights consistently exceed 1.7m and periods average 9.3 seconds or more, meaning the west-facing beaches are dominated by long-period, heavy lines that can barrel on the right day. However, the prevailing westerly wind regime often brings onshore conditions straight out of the bad wind window (WSW-WNW). The key is to time your sessions with the passage of high pressure, which can draw in favourable offshore winds from the east through south (ONO, O, OSO, SO). When the synoptic setup aligns, the combination of solid groundswell and clean, offshore wind creates truly epic conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

These transitional months offer a more manageable but still enjoyable surf scene. Average swell heights drop to between 1.1-1.3m, with periods around 8.7-9.5s, providing plenty of fun, rippable waves. The wind patterns become more variable, and although the ideal wind percentage hovers around 25-29%, the frequency of strong westerly winds decreases compared to winter. April and May see more light wind days and the first hints of summer high pressure slides, delivering clean glassy mornings. September is a wildcard as the Atlantic begins to wake up again; early autumn lows can send renewed swell while the wind still holds in a more favourable quadrant.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer doldrums settle in hard across Bude. Average wave heights sit around the 1.0-1.1m mark and periods drop below 8 seconds, meaning most of the energy is short-period, windswell driven by local sea breezes and the dominant westerly airflow. The ideal wind percentage plummets to 15-19%, as onshore SW-W winds blow relentlessly. The swell direction is overwhelmingly W-WSW, which is both the optimal swell direction and the bad wind direction, creating a frustrating paradox: there is often swell but it is almost always chopped up by onshore wind. Micro-surf, grovel sessions on the inside are the norm, but the occasional weak cold front can inject a few days of cleaner conditions. This is the time for exploring sheltered spots or taking the break.

November: Full Force of Winter

November sees a further ramp-up in power. Average swell height reaches 1.9m and period 9.9s, with a growing share of waves over 2.5m (especially from W and WSW). Swell directions are overwhelmingly W (23.1%), WSW (18.3%), and a notable increase in SW (6.7%) and WNW (8.1%). The wind regime becomes more aggressive: ideal wind percentage is 25%, but the onshore wind camp (SW-W) totals about 27% and often comes with higher speeds (20-30kph). The storm track is fully established, with deep lows charging across the North Atlantic. When these lows pass to the north of Scotland, Bude gets slammed with powerful westerly swell accompanied by strong onshore winds. The trick is to watch for a low-pressure occlusion or a slow-moving high over France that can swing the wind into the offshore quadrant. On those days, the swell can be properly XXL – only for experts. November requires patience and a willingness to drive to find the cleanest corner.
