Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with a marked increase in the frequency and intensity of extratropical cyclones tracking across the northern latitudes. This climatological uptick drives a greater proportion of swell from the N, NNW, and NW quadrants – exactly what this north-facing beach requires. Average swell heights hover around 0.8-1.0m, with periodic pulses of stronger, longer-period energy (10s+) that can turn the lineup into a punchy, hollow playground. Offshore winds from the S to SW sector occur roughly 6-8% of the time, often in the wake of passing fronts, creating clean, glassy conditions. While onshore N-NW winds can spoil sessions, the winter pattern delivers the most consistent combination of optimal swell direction and light offshore flow – especially when a high-pressure system settles over the Bay of Biscay.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months bring a mixed bag. April sees a drop in average swell height to 0.7m and the dominant swell direction shifts towards the NNE and NE, which are still workable but less direct. The percentage of ideal wind conditions remains low (5-6%), and the period average stays around 5.2s – mostly short-period, locally generated chop. September shows a slight uptick in swell from the NW and NNW as autumn lows begin to form, but the overall energy is still moderate. You'll find occasional fun-sized waves if you time it right, but consistency is lacking.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles over the English Channel and the surf flatlines. Average swell heights bottom out at 0.5-0.6m, with periods barely exceeding 5s – think micro to groveling conditions. The swell direction is dominated by the SW and WSW, which wrap in poorly to this north-facing coast, if at all. Onshore N-NE winds blow frequently, adding chop and closing out what little wave energy exists. The ideal offshore wind window (SO, S, SSW, SW) is narrow and often overrun by sea breezes or weak synoptic patterns. Unless you're desperate for a paddle, it's a write-off.

December: Winter Solstice Surge

The year ends with a flourish. Average swell is 1.0m, tying January for the highest, with a period of 5.2s. The dominant swell is again SW (18.6%), followed by WSW (13.6%) and SSW (12.4%) – but the critical north quadrant N (2.5%), NNE (5.5%), NE (6.4%), NW (3.0%), and NNW (6.0%) sum to 23.4% – excellent for the spot. The 1-1.5m class from N, NNE, NE, NW, and NNW accounts for about 5% of the total, and there's even some 1.5-2m from NNE (0.2%), NE (0.5%), and NNW (0.7%) – proper pumping waves. Wind patterns are similar to January: S (7.8%), SSW (10.6%), SW (11.7%) – all offshore. Beware of strong wind from the west and south-west (30-50kph bins) that can make conditions gnarly. Ideal wind percentage is 7%. December often sees negative NAO events, which push the storm track south and deliver relentless NW-NNW swells. This is your month for epic, heavy sessions – if you can handle the cold and wind.
