Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the Mediterranean winter brings L'Ideale to life. As the North Atlantic storm track sinks south, long-period swell trains from the SW and WSW become more frequent, pushing average wave heights into the 0.8-1.0m range and periods hovering around 5 seconds. The offshore wind window (NO, ONO, O, OSO) aligns best during these months, blowing clean from the land and grooming the faces. You'll still need to pick your windows – many days are marred by onshore breezes from the same quadrant – but the potential for punchy, fun-sized waves at 1-1.5m is at its peak.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

Spring and autumn serve as transition zones. April sees the swell height dip to 0.7m and periods shorten, but the wind consistency (14% ideal) can still deliver clean sessions when a NW'erly blows. October brings a slight bump in energy (0.7m, 4.7s) as autumn lows begin to stir, yet the wind remains fickle – you'll chase the rare combo of a solid WSW groundswell and light offshore airs.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

These are the dog days for L'Ideale. The Mediterranean thermal low and high-pressure domination kill the swell window: average heights hover around 0.5-0.6m with periods barely reaching 4.0-4.5s. Most waves are small, groveling, and choppy. The wind is ideal only 6-11% of the time, with predominant sea breezes from the SW and W destroying any chance of clean faces. You'll be better off saving your energy until the autumn equinox.

April: Spring Lull, Wind Increases

April marks a clear step down. Average swell height drops to 0.7m, period to 5.0s, and the wave energy is dominated by S (16.0%) and SSE (14.8%) swell – both poor for L'Ideale as they arrive from the worst onshore direction. The good SW/WSW swell still contributes (13.3% and 14.2%), but heights rarely exceed 0.5-1m. The wind is ideal only 14% of the time, and the dominant wind directions are SE (10.2%) and SSE (10.2%), which blow directly onshore. The offshore wind window (NO-OSO) is present but weak. Expect mostly small, messy conditions. A few days may see a clean WNW groundswell (6.8%) and light OSO breeze – those are the gems, offering rippable, fun waves in the 0.5-1m range.
