Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the Mediterranean winter brings L'Ideale to life. As the North Atlantic storm track sinks south, long-period swell trains from the SW and WSW become more frequent, pushing average wave heights into the 0.8-1.0m range and periods hovering around 5 seconds. The offshore wind window (NO, ONO, O, OSO) aligns best during these months, blowing clean from the land and grooming the faces. You'll still need to pick your windows – many days are marred by onshore breezes from the same quadrant – but the potential for punchy, fun-sized waves at 1-1.5m is at its peak.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

Spring and autumn serve as transition zones. April sees the swell height dip to 0.7m and periods shorten, but the wind consistency (14% ideal) can still deliver clean sessions when a NW'erly blows. October brings a slight bump in energy (0.7m, 4.7s) as autumn lows begin to stir, yet the wind remains fickle – you'll chase the rare combo of a solid WSW groundswell and light offshore airs.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

These are the dog days for L'Ideale. The Mediterranean thermal low and high-pressure domination kill the swell window: average heights hover around 0.5-0.6m with periods barely reaching 4.0-4.5s. Most waves are small, groveling, and choppy. The wind is ideal only 6-11% of the time, with predominant sea breezes from the SW and W destroying any chance of clean faces. You'll be better off saving your energy until the autumn equinox.

January: Deep Winter, Occasional Punch

January sits at the climatic sweet spot. Average swell height of 0.9m and period of 5.1s suggest plenty of rideable, albeit short-period, waves. The dominant swell directions are SW (15.8%) and WSW (13.2%), which wrap nicely into the west-facing beach. However, wind is a constant battle: only 14% of the time is the offshore ideal (NO-OSO). The wind rose shows a strong bias toward NNE (13.3%) and NE (13.6%), which blow cross-shore or slightly offshore? Actually NO is NW, so NNE is not ideal. Most days will be plagued by onshore SW (5.2%) or cross-shore flows. The wave period is short, meaning the energy is punchy but lacks the drive of longer period groundswell. Look for days when a high pressure sits to the north, delivering a clean ONO or OSO breeze – then the 0.5-1m fun-sized waves become rippable.
