Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the Mediterranean winter brings L'Ideale to life. As the North Atlantic storm track sinks south, long-period swell trains from the SW and WSW become more frequent, pushing average wave heights into the 0.8-1.0m range and periods hovering around 5 seconds. The offshore wind window (NO, ONO, O, OSO) aligns best during these months, blowing clean from the land and grooming the faces. You'll still need to pick your windows – many days are marred by onshore breezes from the same quadrant – but the potential for punchy, fun-sized waves at 1-1.5m is at its peak.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

Spring and autumn serve as transition zones. April sees the swell height dip to 0.7m and periods shorten, but the wind consistency (14% ideal) can still deliver clean sessions when a NW'erly blows. October brings a slight bump in energy (0.7m, 4.7s) as autumn lows begin to stir, yet the wind remains fickle – you'll chase the rare combo of a solid WSW groundswell and light offshore airs.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

These are the dog days for L'Ideale. The Mediterranean thermal low and high-pressure domination kill the swell window: average heights hover around 0.5-0.6m with periods barely reaching 4.0-4.5s. Most waves are small, groveling, and choppy. The wind is ideal only 6-11% of the time, with predominant sea breezes from the SW and W destroying any chance of clean faces. You'll be better off saving your energy until the autumn equinox.

March: Transition Begins, Energy Fades

As winter loosens its grip, average swell height dips to 0.8m and period is 5.1s. Swell direction shifts slightly: WSW (14.0%) and SW (13.7%) still dominate, but SSE (11.4%) and S (12.0%) become more influential, bringing shorter, wind-affected waves. The offshore wind percentage remains at 14%, but the wind rose shows increasing SE (8.8%) and SSE (9.1%) components, which often bring afternoon onshores. Surfable days become rarer, confined to early mornings when a NW'erly offshore (6.6% from N, 10.3% from NNE – but those are not ideal) – actually the ideal directions NO-OSO come from the west quadrant, which are not prominent yet. Look for a strong high pressure to park over the Alps, delivering a clean ONO breeze to polish fun-sized 1m waves.
