Best Surf Season (November - February)

The heart of winter brings the most consistent and powerful swell to Marinaretti. As the North Atlantic storm track intensifies, long-period groundswells from the S through SW window become more frequent. Average wave heights hover around 0.9-1.0m with periods in the rideable 5.6-5.8s range, though occasional pulses push into the 1.5m+ range. More importantly, the frequency of offshore winds from the N-NNW quadrant peaks during these months, with ideal wind conditions occurring 24-31% of the time. This combination delivers the best quality surf of the year, with clean, punchy waves peeling along the beach.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & October)

Shoulder months see a gradual transition. Swell heights average 0.7-0.8m and periods shorten slightly to 5.0-5.5s. While the swell window remains active, the wind patterns become less reliable. The number of days with clean offshore flow drops to 16-23%, and onshore winds from the S-SW increase, often chopping up wave faces. Still, when a strong low pressure system aligns with a northerly wind event, Marinaretti can produce fun, rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer brings the doldrums. The Mediterranean settles into a high-pressure pattern, suppressing swell generation. Average wave heights plummet to 0.5-0.6m with periods under 5s, resulting in mostly small, weak, and often messy conditions. Offshore wind odds drop to a mere 12-15%, and the prevailing onshore breezes from the S-SW further degrade what little swell exists. This is the time for a groveler and a patient mindset; waves are typically micro and only suitable for longboard or foamie sessions during rare favorable windows.

July: Peak Summer Doldrums

July continues the trend with the smallest waves of the year. Average wave height remains at 0.5m, period at 4.3s. The swell is overwhelmingly from the W (39.2%) and WNW (16.2%), almost entirely local windswell. Optimal southerly swells are very low in frequency and height. Ideal wind days are a mere 13%. The wind pattern is dominated by light onshore breezes, especially from the W and SW. When the rare northerly wind does blow, it usually coincides with no swell. Prone to flat spells that can last a week or more. Not a month to plan a surf trip to Marinaretti.
