September and October experience a gradual warming and weakening of the winter wind regime, but the ocean still holds plenty of Southern Ocean energy. Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in Sydney brings lighter, more variable winds and a noticeable drop in consistency. From November through February, the offshore wind windows shrink to just 12-18%, with frequent seabreezes from the NE and E turning the waves bumpy. The swell mix shifts toward shorter-period E and NE windswell, averaging 1.5-1.6m and periods around 8.3-8.8s. While it’s not firing, early mornings can still deliver fun, groveling waves before the onshores kick in. For the best chance of a clean session, target a south swell with a westerly breeze – but be ready for crowded banks.

March: Autumn Stirrings

March marks the beginning of the autumn transition, and the stats show it. Offshore wind jumps to 20% – the best since last winter – and the average wave period climbs to 9.2s. Swell directions shift more toward the SE (16.9%) and SSE (19.3%), with SSE overtaking ENE as the primary swell source.
