September and October experience a gradual warming and weakening of the winter wind regime, but the ocean still holds plenty of Southern Ocean energy. Expect average wave heights around 1.6-1.7m with periods in the 9-9.4s range. The key is to pick your days when a clean westerly lines up with a solid SE groundswell.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in Sydney brings lighter, more variable winds and a noticeable drop in consistency. From November through February, the offshore wind windows shrink to just 12-18%, with frequent seabreezes from the NE and E turning the waves bumpy. The swell mix shifts toward shorter-period E and NE windswell, averaging 1.5-1.6m and periods around 8.3-8.8s. While it’s not firing, early mornings can still deliver fun, groveling waves before the onshores kick in. For the best chance of a clean session, target a south swell with a westerly breeze – but be ready for crowded banks.

October: Spring Shuffle

October is a month of transition, with offshore wind dropping further to 26%. The average swell period declines to 8.7s, and the average height holds at 1.6m. The dominant swell directions are SSE (19.3%) and SE (13.2%), but ENE (12%) and NE (9.1%) swells are on the rise. The wind patterns shift decidedly: N (8.2%), NNE (10.9%), and NE (11.3%) blow onshore more frequently, so clean sessions are harder to find. The good news is that strong lows can still form in the Tasman Sea, generating SE groundswell with a period of 10-12s. When a high pressure system sits over the Great Australian Bight, it can funnel a W-NW offshore breeze across Sydney for a few hours. Those windows are gold – punchy lines with less crowd. Patience and a flexible schedule are essential in October.
