During these months, the North American winter high-pressure system strengthens the Caribbean trade winds, funneling consistent offshore winds from the north and northeast across the Azuero Peninsula. Playa Cambutal's south-facing orientation basks in the protection of these NNE-N winds, which blow clean and dry across the lineup. Simultaneously, the Southern Hemisphere's winter storm track sends long-period SSW-SW swells marching up the Pacific coast, arriving with periods averaging 12-14 seconds and heights around 1-1.3m. This combination of groomed wave faces and powerful, lined-up swell produces some of the most consistent and rippable conditions of the year. December offers a peak reliability with 71% ideal wind readings, while January and April hover around 65% – prime time for scoring glassy, fun-sized waves.

Fair Surf Season (May, June, July, August, November)

As the ITCZ drifts northward in spring and summer, the trade wind regime weakens significantly. Winds become more variable and often swing into the WSW-W quadrant, blowing directly onshore at Cambutal and degrading wave quality. However, the Southern Ocean swell machine stays active, churning out plentiful SSW-SW swell in the 1-1.5m range with periods of 13-14 seconds. When a temporary ridge builds or a cold front pushes down, short windows of offshore NNE flow can still produce smooth, reeling surf – especially in the early mornings. May and November offer the best odds among these months (43-46% ideal wind), while mid-summer months like June and August require more patience and a keen eye on the charts.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

The heart of the Central American rainy season delivers the lowest quality surf windows. The ITCZ sits at its northernmost point, and persistent WSW-W winds dominate over 70% of the time, creating choppy, onshore conditions that wreck what could be great waves. The swell itself remains robust – average heights of 1.4m with long periods of 13-14 seconds – but the surface texture makes it difficult to find a clean face. When a tropical wave or a rare cold front shifts the wind north, the payoff can be epic, as those long-period SSW and SW swells become glassy and powerful. But you need to be ready to drop everything and go. September and October are strictly for the die-hards who love a challenge and are willing to hunt for the fleeting clean moments.

April: Long Period, Consistent Swell

April offers the longest average wave period of the year at 14.1 seconds, a sign of distant, powerful storm systems in the Southern Ocean. The SSW direction dominates almost exclusively, accounting for 88.5% of all swell energy – much of it in the 1-1.5m range (64.8%) and a healthy 14.5% in the 1.5-2m category. Wind quality remains high at 62% favorable, though the dominant wind direction begins to shift. While NNE winds still lead (23.6%), there is a broader spread from the west and northwest, indicating the transition toward the rainy season. Mornings are often glassy with light offshore flow, giving way to more variable afternoon breezes. Still, the combination of long-period groundswell and frequent clean windows makes April a fantastic month for intermediate to advanced surfers.
