Playa Cambutal's south-facing orientation basks in the protection of these NNE-N winds, which blow clean and dry across the lineup. Simultaneously, the Southern Hemisphere's winter storm track sends long-period SSW-SW swells marching up the Pacific coast, arriving with periods averaging 12-14 seconds and heights around 1-1.3m. This combination of groomed wave faces and powerful, lined-up swell produces some of the most consistent and rippable conditions of the year. December offers a peak reliability with 71% ideal wind readings, while January and April hover around 65% – prime time for scoring glassy, fun-sized waves.

Fair Surf Season (May, June, July, August, November)

As the ITCZ drifts northward in spring and summer, the trade wind regime weakens significantly. The heart of the Central American rainy season delivers the lowest quality surf windows. The ITCZ sits at its northernmost point, and persistent WSW-W winds dominate over 70% of the time, creating choppy, onshore conditions that wreck what could be great waves. The swell itself remains robust – average heights of 1.4m with long periods of 13-14 seconds – but the surface texture makes it difficult to find a clean face. When a tropical wave or a rare cold front shifts the wind north, the payoff can be epic, as those long-period SSW and SW swells become glassy and powerful. But you need to be ready to drop everything and go. September and October are strictly for the die-hards who love a challenge and are willing to hunt for the fleeting clean moments.

November: Light at the End of the Tunnel

November shows a clear recovery, with ideal wind readings climbing back to 46%. While W and WSW winds are still present (combined 43%), the NNE to N winds are making a comeback (combined 13.1%), signaling the return of the dry-season pattern. Swell direction continues to favor SSW (62.9%) and SW (35.9%), with average height dipping slightly to 1.3m and period to 12.7 seconds. The decreasing period reflects a shift away from the most distant storms, but the quality of the surf improves as the wind becomes more reliable.
