Best Surf Season (February - March)

February and March are the undisputed peak months at Punta Burica. During this window, the North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens, funneling stable, offshore winds from the NNE-E quadrant across the peninsula. The statistics bear this out: ideal wind conditions jump to 27-29% of the time, the highest of the year. Meanwhile, long-period (13-14s) SSW groundswells pulse in consistently, with average heights hovering in the 1.0-1.2m range — that perfect 'fun' to 'good' zone where the waves are pushy yet rippable. The combination of clean, groomed faces and consistent swell makes this the go-to period for quality sessions.

Fair Surf Season (November - January & April)

Shoulder months offer a mixed bag of opportunity. November and December see the tail end of the northern hemisphere storm track, delivering solid SSW and SW swell (1.1-1.4m) with periods around 12-13s, but the wind is a gamble — ideal conditions occur only 4-7% of the time, with frequent onshore W-WSW flow from passing cold fronts. January shows a marked improvement to 16% ideal wind, and April ramps up to 19% as the dry season sets in, with average wave heights climbing to 1.3m and periods stretching to 14.1s. These months require patience and a close eye on the forecast, but when a high-pressure ridge locks in, the waves can be world-class.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates north, parking a persistent belt of onshore winds over southern Central America. At Punta Burica, this translates to a relentless stream of SW-W winds that ruin wave quality. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 3-8%, while swell heights actually max out at 1.5m with long periods (13-14s) — but it's a cruel irony because those powerful waves are almost always accompanied by choppy, bumpy conditions. Occasional brief windows of E-NE outflow from passing cold fronts or tropical waves can salvage a session, but they are rare. This is the time to wax the longboard and look for sheltered nooks, or simply wait out the wind.

December: Building Toward Prime

December marks the final step before the prime season. Average swell height drops to 1.1m (small to fun-sized) but the period remains solid at 12.7s. Swell direction is predominantly SSW (81%) and SW (19%). Wave heights are mostly in the 0.5-1.5m range (76%), offering rippable, user-friendly waves. Ideal wind conditions improve to 7%, double the summer low. The wind rose still shows strong westerly components, but offshore NNE-ENE flow begins to appear more frequently as high pressure builds over the continent. December offers the first reliable windows of clean surf. It's a month of anticipation — the swell is lighter, but when the wind aligns, the quality is outstanding.
