Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the Southern Hemisphere winter, Sao Conrado comes alive with consistent, long-period swell from the South Atlantic. March and April still see decent swell, often with longer periods (10+ seconds), but the wind quality becomes more variable with an increase in easterly trade winds. September and October show a decline in ideal wind percentages (to around 37-42%), but remaining swell energy from winter storms can still produce fun, good-sized waves, especially when a strong cold front aligns with clean northwesterly winds.

The Brazilian summer brings smaller, less consistent surf to Sao Conrado. Average wave heights drop to around 1.1-1.3m with shorter periods (9-10 seconds) as the South Pacific storm track weakens. Dominant ESE to SE winds often create bumpy, onshore conditions, though occasional pulses of S swell can sneak in. May is a prime month at Sao Conrado. As the Southern Hemisphere winter begins to intensify, the average swell height reaches 1.5m with a stellar 11-second period. The dominant swell direction shifts firmly to the south, with S and SSE accounting for over 60% of the energy. The wind regime becomes more favorable, with 51% ideal conditions. The increased frequency of north and northeast winds, especially in the mornings, provides clean, groomed conditions for the powerful S swell. Expect pumping waves in the 1-2m range, with the occasional larger set. This is the month when long-period energy meets offshore breezes – a recipe for epic sessions.
