Best Surf Season (December - March)

The winter months are Melbourne Beach's most consistent window for quality surf. As cold fronts roll off the North American continent, winds swing from the west through north-west, providing the offshore and cross-offshore flow this east-north-east facing beach needs to keep the surface clean. At the same time, Nor'easters and frontal low pressure systems spinning up along the eastern seaboard pump in a solid mix of NE, ENE and E swell. Average wave heights hover around 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) with average periods in the 8-9s range, producing punchy, rideable waves on the sandbars. When the North Atlantic Oscillation shifts negative, the mid-latitude storm track flexes and the eastern seaboard sees repeated cold fronts, making these clean windows even more frequent. Water temperatures sit in the low 20s Celsius, so a springsuit or 3/2 wetsuit is the standard call.
