Spessard Holland

Spessard Holland is a classic sand-bottom beachbreak, offering both right and left waves that can deliver surprisingly punchy rides. When neighboring high-tide spots get messy and washed out, this stretch often stays cleaner, with the wave faces jacking up steeper where a deep trough just beyond the inside sandbar creates a sudden depth change—catching many a surfer off guard with its abrupt, hollow sections. The break is split between two parks, North and South, each capable of producing reliable, rippable peaks when the sand cooperates. Years of beach renourishment projects have kept the sandbars in constant flux, so the lineup demands a keen eye and a willingness to move. But when the sand finally lines up right, Spessard can transform from a dependable daily driver into a true standout—a sleeper hit that rewards those who know where to sit.

Best Surf Season (December - February)

Winter is prime time at Spessard Holland. As the North Atlantic storm track settles into a more active pattern and cold fronts regularly push off the U.S. East Coast, the beach's east-northeast exposure is fed by repeated pulses of NNE, NE, ENE, and E groundswell. Average heights run a consistent 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), with periods in the punchy 8-second range, and-most importantly-offshore W/SW flow blows 22-24% of the time. That is the highest percentage of clean wind of any season, so the chances of scoring lined-up, rideable waves increase dramatically.
